Well, to be honest, it has happened to all of us! Since Instagram announced that they are adding the “Like” feature for their Instagram stories, it has been a while.
And it became true on 14 February 2022. On the love day, Valentin’s day, Instagram broadly shared this feature for all its users to spread love and send red hearts to everyone you like.

Instagram has added the “Like” button on the story section
Instagram’s Head, Adam Mosseri, on the day of announcing like feature on the story section, told that their aim is for people to share more love and support to each other on the story section and, yes, keep the direct section clean.
And honestly, he is right! You don’t need to send a direct message (whether a simple reaction or a reply) to all the people you follow. If you are interested in a story, just tap the empty heart next to the reply box and like the Story.
If you don’t want to clutter the creator’s direct message and open up more chats, their Story can be a good solution.
How does the like feature work on Instagram?
The User, who you have liked its Story, will receive a notification if you have liked their feed posts. But it will show the like privately. On the feed, if you tap on the likes under each post, you will see the people who have liked the content, but on the story section, the people who have liked a story are only visible to the creator, and that’s it!
They also can find out you liked their Story on the list of your story viewer sheet because your name will appear with a small red heart next to it.
How can you like an Instagram Story without sending a DM?
First things first, make sure that you have updated your Instagram to the later version. To ensure your Instagram is updated, head to the Google Play (for Android users) or App Store (for iOS users) and check it.
After that, just follow the steps below:
- Open Instagram on your phone.
- In the Feed section, tap to open a user’s Story at the top of your screen.
- You will see a “Heart icon” at the bottom, right next to the Send Message field.
- Tap on it to make its color RED.
Now the creator will receive a notification and know that you have liked his/her Story.
This can clean up your direct section from the annoying reacts to your stories! And not only that, you don’t look for the proper answer for their react to your Story! Instagram is streamlining its interface, and this private feature is one of the first moves.
I love these small but handy updates on Instagram! If you remember, this company added the option to delete one images and videos from carousel posts last year.
Story likes aren’t that huge of an option, and it won’t fundamentally change the way you use Instagram! But it’s a great one.

In my opinion, with adding this feature, Instagram wanted to make “Messaging” a key priority on DMs. If you’re going to quickly tell creators that you are interested in their stories, just tap on the heart and like their Story.
